Times Staff and Wire Reports

InVision Technologies Inc. won a $52.2-million Federal Aviation Administration contract to provide sophisticated explosives-detection systems to U.S. airports. Foster City-based InVision will provide 54 of its CTX-5000 SP explosives detectors to the FAA within a year for use in the nation’s largest and busiest airports, the agency said. The FAA has an option to buy more of the devices in the second year of the contract, raising its potential value to $102.2 million. CTX-5000, the only machine certified by the FAA to check baggage for explosives, uses X-ray technology to identify suspicious objects inside luggage. It displays pictures of the items to operators who are trained to identify explosives. InVision shares rose 50 cents to close at $25.50 on the New York Stock Exchange.
