Tire Maker Relocates to Cypress

Just as it is U.S. headquarters for five Asian car importers, Orange County also is home to two big Asian tire makers.

Yokohama Tire Corp. was first, setting up headquarters in Los Angeles in 1969 and moving to Fullerton in 1986 when it built a big regional distribution center there. The company has about 120 employees in Fullerton and more than 1,000 nationwide. Yokohama makes tires in Japan and at plants in Salem, Va., and Mt. Vernon, Ill.

Now comes Japan’s Toyo Tire Corp., which entered the U.S. in 1966 and moved its U.S. sales and administration headquarters to Cypress from Compton earlier this year. The move, which shifted about 45 workers, was made in conjunction with the opening of Toyo’s centralized warehouse and distribution center in Ontario.

Since then, the payroll in Cypress has swelled a bit and the company now has 52 workers in Orange County, plus 20 in Ontario and 38 scattered in sales offices across the country for total U.S. employment of 110.
