Bruins Not Winning Fans Over Either

Share

One wonders who is coaching fundamentals these days to the obviously overrated, over-hyped future NBA golden boys at UCLA, given the inordinate turnovers, lack of focus and undisciplined style of play all on painful display this season. Cameron Dollar is not only “the one” [Dec. 19], but also the “zero”--equal to the number of points he scored against Illinois.

Was it only last year that UCLA had pride, intensity and a real program in place?

I read with interest the recent NCAA violations handed down to the basketball programs of Louisville and Arkansas. The athletic directors of these schools said they recognized their problems and were working to improve these situations. There was no mention of a coaching change.

On the other hand, Pete Dalis saw a potential secondary NCAA violation and instead of working with the coach decided to open a Watergate type of investigation. There were no violations ever announced from the Pacific 10 or the NCAA, but the coach was still fired. What is disturbing is the total disregard for UCLA’s future basketball program, let alone the devastating effect on Coach Harrick’s reputation.

Watching the UCLA-Kansas game was a sign of things to come. I find it incredible that the players and fans will have to suffer for the irrational decision of Chuck Young and Pete Dalis.

I found it astonishing that passing to one’s teammates, the breakthrough concept now being introduced to UCLA’s basketball forces, prompted finger-pointing by Kris “Ball Hog” Johnson when he remarked, “I feel like I’m part of a team again.”

Perhaps introspection will be the next notion that Coach Lavin sets forth. Bruin, know thyself.
