Alabama’s Tide Stopped at San Jose State

Olivier Saint-Jean scored 18 points, including a decisive layup with 1:40 left in overtime, as San Jose State upset No. 19 Alabama, 60-59, Friday night, giving the Crimson Tide its first loss of the season.

Thomas Lowery added 16 points as the Spartans (7-2) won the first-round game in the Cable Car Classic at San Jose and moved into tonight’s championship against Detroit Mercy.

Eric Washington scored 23 points and Brian Williams had 20 for Alabama (10-1).

Detroit Mercy (5-5) advanced with an 84-77 victory over Santa Clara (5-6).

No. 13 Indiana 63, Colgate 48--Andrae Patterson led a balanced attack with 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Hoosiers (12-1) won a first-round game in the Hoosier Classic at Indianapolis.

Adonal Foyle of Colgate (0-7), the nation’s leading rebounder and shot blocker, matched Patterson’s numbers with 16 points and 13 rebounds, his 17th consecutive double-double.

Indiana (12-1) will meet Valparaiso (7-1), which beat Army (3-3), 88-48, for the championship today.

No. 14 New Mexico 67, Bucknell 57--Clayton Shields scored 18 points and Charles Smith had a career-high 14 rebounds as the Lobos wore down the cold-shooting Bison in the first round of the Lobo Invitational at Albuquerque.

Bucknell (5-4) missed its first 11 shots and went scoreless over the final four minutes of the first half to trail, 35-21. Gordon Mboya and J.R. Holden, who came into the game averaging 16 points each, were a combined 0-for-13 shooting in the first 20 minutes.

New Mexico (10-1) will play Mississippi (7-1), a 75-63 winner over Appalachian State tonight for the championship.

New Mexico State 122, No. 20 Texas Tech 105--Antoine Hubbard scored 30 points and Enoch Davis added 26 to lead the Aggies (5-3) to an upset victory in the opening round of the Cowboy Shootout at Casper, Wyo.

Cory Carr, who led all scorers with 31 points for Texas Tech (7-2), was held scoreless over the final nine minutes.

No. 21 Maryland 66, Pittsburgh 63--Keith Booth scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half to help the Terrapins survive a first-round victory in the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu.

Booth made six of seven shots over the final 20 minutes as Maryland (10-0) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to overtake the pesky Panthers (5-6), who were paced by the long-range shooting of Jason Maile. Maile scored 29 points, 21 coming from behind the three-point arc.

No. 24 Oregon 82, Temple 62--Jamar Curry scored 18 of his season-high 23 points in a second-half rally as the Ducks (8-0) stayed unbeaten with a first-round victory in the Far West Classic at Portland.

Temple (4-3) was outscored, 38-13, in the game’s final 7 1/2 minutes.

The Ducks play for the tournament title tonight against Oregon State (4-4), a 72-60 winner over Bradley (3-4).

No. 25 Boston College 63, Central Connecticut State 53--Danya Abrams scored 17 points and was eight of 10 from the foul line over the final eight minutes as the Eagles (6-1) survived a scare at Newton, Mass.

Scoonie Penn, who scored five points in the closing minutes, added 11 points for Boston College, which scored the game’s final eight points after Central Connecticut (4-4) closed to 55-53 with 3 1/2 minutes left.

OTHER GAMES

Rashamel Jones scored 17 points and made a critical free throw with 9.5 seconds left to lead Connecticut (7-2) to a 64-61 victory over Massachusetts (4-7) at Hartford, Conn. . . . Redshirt freshman Guy Rucker scored a season-high 17 points and helped spark a 21-0 run that broke the game open early as Iowa (8-3) rolled to a 90-58 victory over Austin Peay (2-7) at Iowa City. . . . Chris Crawford scored 20 points to lead Marquette (7-2) to its fifth consecutive win, a 65-61 victory at Dayton (4-3). . . . Pete Lisicky and Calvin Booth each scored 18 points as Penn State (7-2) used a furious second-half outburst to claim a 75-53 victory over Brigham Young (1-8) at State College, Penn.

Rashaan Palmer scored 15 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead St. Bonaventure (5-2) to a 63-61 victory over Alabama Birmingham (8-4) in the first round of the Arizona State-Tribune Classic at Tempe. In the other game, Michael Batiste scored 19 points to lead Arizona State (7-3) to a 74-57 victory over William and Mary (3-4).

Guard Lorenzo Rollins scored 30 points as Gonzaga (6-4) jumped out to a 22-point lead and held on for a 90-83 victory over Idaho State (3-4) in the first round of the Albertson’s Holiday Classic at Boise. Gonzaga will play Boise State (3-5), which forced 26 turnovers in a 72-41 victory over Campbell (2-6). . . . Shea Seals scored 24 points, including two key baskets early in the second half, to lead Tulsa (7-3) to a 76-60 victory over Southwest Texas State (4-4) in the first round of the All-College basketball tournament at Oklahoma City. In the other game, Oklahoma (8-1) received 23 points from Nate Erdmann in a 74-62 victory over Western Illinois (4-3).

Forward Tunji Awojobi scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half to lead Boston University (6-3) to a 71-51 victory over Loyola Maryland (2-5) in the first round of the South Florida Sports Foundation Classic at Tampa.
