High Tech, High Wages

California has more than twice as many high-tech workers as any other state, and is also home to some of the industry’s highest wages, according to a study by the American Electronics Assn., an industry trade group.

New Hampshire has the highest concentration of high-tech workers with 78 per thousand employees, while California was fourth with 62 high-tech workers per 1,000. But California had by far the largest high-tech employment, with 669,000 workers. Texas was second with 313,460.

With average annual wages of $55,160, California’s technology workers received higher pay than employees in all other states except Washington and New York. High-tech workers in California also earn 84% more than the statewide average for all industries, $30,021.

The trade group has 170 member companies in Orange County that employ about 30,000 workers.
