The Camarillo PTA Council is throwing a birthday party to celebrate its state and national counterparts’ beginnings 100 years ago.

The celebration, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Las Colinas School gymnasium, will include cake and balloons, as well as a commemorative planting of a hibiscus bush and mounting of a plaque on the library wall.

The Camarillo PTA Council was formed in February 1972 and has more than 3,800 members.

The council has coordinated several programs, including Day With an Author, Red Ribbon Week, Parent Education Evenings and the Reflections Program, a National PTA cultural arts program that encourages students to create original works of literature, music, visual arts and photography.

Both the California State PTA and the National PTA were started in 1897 and are the only all-volunteer organizations advocating on behalf of children and youth, said Mimi Timrott, Camarillo PTA Council president.

“What we do for our own children can only do so much good,” Timrott said. “We have to make our society as good as it can be so that all of our children have the best opportunity possible.”
