Protests Spur Council to Delay Carwash Plan

Share

After several residents protested, the City Council has delayed action on a proposal for a carwash to be built at Valley View and Cerritos streets and agreed to reconsider the issue in 45 days.

The proposal calls for a combination carwash, gas station, mini-market and lube-and-tune outlet on the site of a former Unocal 76 service station at that intersection.

A crowd of south Cypress residents attended the council meeting last week to oppose the project. Of 11 residents who spoke at the public hearing, all were against the proposal.

Edgar A.K. Aramouni, representing the group proposing the project, said that sponsors have signatures of more than 200 city residents supporting the carwash.

But Mayor Tom Carroll pointed out that “none of them came here to speak for it” and said that the project as presented Monday was not feasible.

City Community Development Director Chris Kelly had recommended that the council reject the multiuse proposal.
