Parents, teachers and community members plan to discuss the problems facing San Gabriel Valley public schools during a meeting scheduled for today in Monterey Park with the state superintendent for public instruction.

Delaine Eastin, who is making several Southern California school visits this week, is scheduled to speak at the Duarte / Monrovia District PTA conference in the morning before visiting Monterey Park’s Maxwell Elementary School, where Marina Tse, who was appointed by Gov. Pete Wilson to the State Board of Education, has taught for more than 20 years.

Tse will host a community meeting between the superintendent and several Asian American organizations in the Friends Room of the Bruggemeyer Memorial Library at 3 p.m.

“I think those education leaders up in Sacramento who are implementing [state] programs should go to local schools . . . and communities,” Tse said. “Then they don’t [base their decisions] on paper or on reports. They have to hear the students, hear the teachers.”

Eastin said she makes weekly trips to schools across the state, but this trip will be a unique opportunity to meet with a large group of Asian community leaders.

“Public education has found some of [its] best allies in the Asian community,” Eastin said.
