Chamber to Sponsor Forum for Candidates

Candidates for City Council and city treasurer will share their views with the local business community at a candidates forum on Wednesday.

Six candidates are running for two open council seats and two candidates are vying for the city treasurer position in San Fernando’s March 4 election. All eight candidates are expected at the forum, which is sponsored by the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.

“This is an opportunity for them to show how their views contrast with the other candidates,” said chamber President Bruce Cohen. “Each candidate will deliver opening and closing statements, and we will have a lot of questions for them in between.”

Among the issues to be explored, Cohen said, are the candidates’ positions on economic development, taxes and the city’s role in assisting the local business community.

The council candidates include Cal State Northridge Chicano studies professor Jose Hernandez; retired businessman Donald Mauran; Virginia Mendoza, a registered nurse; Juana Mojica, project director for San Fernando Valley Partnership Inc.; Silverio Robledo, a bank loan officer; and Robert Villafana, a social worker.

The candidates for city treasurer are Elvira Orozco and Gerald Olmstead.

The event includes lunch and costs $16. It will start at noon at the Odyssey Restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills.
