Two Legislators Seek Hearing on Belmont Learning Center

Two state legislators on Friday formally requested an investigative hearing on the Los Angeles Unified School District’s proposed downtown high school.

Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa (D-Los Angeles) joined state Sen. Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles) in asking for the hearing before the Senate Education Committee. In letters to the committee, they raised questions about such issues as the escalating price of the project, first estimated at $60 million and now hovering closer to $100 million when various fees are included, and the method for choosing a developer as part of a complex public-private partnership.

School board President Jeff Horton said none of the concerns raised so far have changed his mind about going forward with the Belmont Learning Center project.
