Forms for Changing Schools Available

Share

Parents who want their children to attend a school other than the one in their neighborhood may submit an application to their school of choice now through March 3.

Under Simi Valley’s school choice program, campuses first enroll students from the surrounding neighborhood. Any remaining openings are available to students from any part of the city, according to Kathy Scroggin, interim assistant superintendent for secondary education.

Most schools have openings, but not at every grade level. Three schools--Crestview, Madera and White Oak elementaries--are already full and will not accept choice applications.

If a school receives more applications than it has openings, a lottery will be held and a waiting list will be created.

Because of a recent school board decision, the 1997-98 school year will be the first time sixth-graders will be allowed to choose between attending elementary or middle school. Parents who want their children to attend a middle school must complete a choice application and return it to their neighborhood elementary, Scroggin stressed.

Applications are also being accepted for Santa Susana--the performing arts and technology magnet high school. During its second year of existence, Santa Susana will enroll ninth- through 11th-grade students. To visit the new magnet school before signing up, parents can call the school at 520-6800.

School choice applications are available at school offices and at the district office, 875 E. Cochran St. For more information, parents may call their preferred school choice or call 520-6571.
