Few could have predicted the two hottest teams in the Pac-10 this late in the season would be the Trojans and Bears. But with six consecutive victories, including 71-68 over UCLA on Thursday, California is among four teams tied for first in the conference, along with USC, which has won its last three. The Trojans, without Rodrick Rhodes, were beaten by Cal, 83-71, on Jan. 9, and had no answer for Ed Gray, who scored 28 points. Cal has gotten consistent play from guard Prentice McGruder and shooter Randy Duck. The Trojan defense will have to do better than the last time, when the Bears shot 60%.
