Festival of Whales Starts This Weekend

Three weeks of educational and recreational events will begin Saturday, the opening of the 26th annual Festival of Whales.

The event, which celebrates the coastal migration of the California gray whale, continues through March 2.

This weekend, the festival opens with a parade Saturday at 10 a.m. at Street of the Blue Lantern and Santa Clara Avenue.

A free street fair with more than 100 exhibits, a petting zoo, entertainment and games will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at La Plaza near Pacific Coast Highway North.

On Sunday, fitness enthusiasts may participate in the Whale Chase, a 5K and 12K run and walk.

The race, which includes a 1K fun run for children, will start at 8 a.m. near the Ritz-Carlton, proceed along Monarch Beach Golf Links and end at Salt Creek Beach.

Daily activities throughout the festival will include whale watching, sand sculpture displays, tide-pool tours, ocean sports and marine life presentations by the Orange County Marine Institute.
