Laura Ashley is returning to its roots.
The latest home furnishings collection is an updated interpretation of classic Laura Ashley design.
Drawing on the simple things in life--gardening, baking bread, long walks and a favorite, old straw hat--the two new groupings are brimming with color that has been muted yet still looks sumptuous.
The Chinoiserie grouping was inspired by 18th century hand-painted wallpaper. Ornamental features, such as bamboo and jasmine, are juxtaposed with stripes and damasks for a serene look. The main colors in this grouping are cool blues, ivories, olives and Shantung neutrals.
The country grouping, Falmouth, celebrates the spirit of outdoors in its bold woven checks. The primary colors in this grouping are blue chambray, berry red, a sun-warmed cowslip and emerald green.
In all, 18 fabric designs are new for 1997. The fabric ($20 to $30 a yard) is suitable for upholstery or drapes.

French Scents
The mesmerizing qualities of French perfume are well-known throughout the world. Now the aroma, the drama and ooh-la-la of French perfume can be released in the air with scented candles by Comptoir Sud Pacifique, which is based in Paris.
The candles, the latest edition to Comptoir Sud Pacifique’s line of perfumes, body creams and men’s products, are long-lasting and more intense than typical candles, which keep the scent fresh and true.
The slow-burning candles (5.5 ounces, $76; refills, $44) are packaged in frosted glass and wood casings. Three fragrances--vanille, citrus scents and floral and spice--are available at Nordstrom stores throughout the county.
