The Trojan War for Attention Goes On

Share

A letter writer asked why UCLA basketball gets more prominent attention than USC basketball? Let me count the reasons: UCLA has won 11 national championships (including L.A.’s only major championship of this decade), has defeated USC almost as many times in a row as the football team and tops USC almost three to one in attendance.

The only thing keeping the basketball rivalry from being as much fun as the football rivalry isn’t lack of coverage in the paper, it’s USC’s lack of support for the team. I suggest the fans stop complaining to The Times and show up at the Sports Arena. Even the Clippers outsell the Trojans!

Thanks again for your excellent coverage of USC basketball. Why should your perpetual love affair with UCLA basketball call for blatantly unequal treatment of USC? Particularly when the Trojans are having a good season.

Is it really that painful to put USC results on the front page? Yes, I know that UCLA has a bigger following, but I notice that UCLA football results share the front page with USC, even though USC is the “football school.”

It is quite embarrassing to read an article that treats a UCLA victory over Oregon State like an NCAA tournament win.
