With less than a minute to play and a one-goal lead at Dallas on Friday night, the Detroit Red Wings, second in the Central Division, figured they were about to pick up some ground on the Stars, the only team ahead of them.

Instead, the Stars turned on the firepower and left the stunned Red Wings in their rear-view mirror, eight points behind after Dallas’ 4-3 overtime victory.

Mike Kennedy scored the game-winner, his first goal of the season, with 2:57 left in the extra period, after Benoit Hogue slammed home the tying goal with 45.2 seconds remaining in regulation.

Hogue scored his 13th goal when the Stars pulled goaltender Arturs Irbe for a sixth attacker.

Brendan Shanahan had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, giving him seven goals and three assists in his last three games.

Washington 5, Tampa Bay 4--The tired, injury-riddled Capitals had blown a three-goal lead in 15 minutes and were just trying to hang on in overtime at Landover, Md.

Somehow, on his third swing at a rebound, Steve Konowalchuk slipped the puck past goaltender Rick Tabaracci with 2:03 remaining for his second goal of the night.

The win broke a four-game home losing streak for the Bullets, but it cost them defenseman Joe Reekie, who broke his right heel.

Tampa Bay was 0 for 44 on the power play against the Capitals since March 1995 before Paul Ysebaert scored on a back-hander between the circles to tie the score with 5:01 left in regulation.
