Rwandan Supreme Court Justice Slain by Attackers in Uniform
Uniformed gunmen shot and killed a Rwandan Supreme Court justice at his home, his wife said Saturday. Two other people died in the assault.
Three attackers opened fire as a car carrying Vincent Nkezabaganwa pulled into the driveway of his home in Kigali on Friday night. The gunmen killed Nkezabaganwa, his driver and a neighbor.
It was not clear what kind of uniforms the attackers were wearing. Neighbors said security forces exchanged gunfire with the assailants, who escaped.
The killings were the latest in a series of violent attacks that have claimed the lives of more than a dozen Rwandans and foreigners this month.
No one from the police or the government was immediately available to comment. Nkezabaganwa, a Hutu, was to be buried today.
Violence has increased sharply in the central African nation since hundreds of thousands of Hutu refugees returned from neighboring Zaire and Tanzania late last year.
The refugees fled in mid-1994, fearing retaliation for the massacre of at least 500,000 people, most of them minority Tutsis.
