$500 More Would Be Music to Young Ears

Despite their fund-raising efforts, student musicians at Adelaide Price Elementary School are $500 away from seeing a performance of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra at the Orange County Performing Arts Center.

Price is one of 10 county schools that participate in Class Act, a program sponsored by the symphony program that includes monthly performances at schools by musicians and free performances at concert halls.

But the nearly 1,200 students at the school need money for transportation to see the symphony on May 1. The school district recently rejected the school’s request for funding.

“The district decided, if they paid for transportation for us for this special project, then it would set a precedent,” said Reon Boydstun-Youngs, vice president of Price’s PTA.

The Harp Guild of Anaheim, a support group for the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, is donating $500 toward the students’ transportation, and the school has applied for an Anaheim Arts Council grant to cover the rest.
