Re “Russian Woes May Delay Work on Space Station,” Feb. 13:
When the U.S. gives away tax dollars to Russia to be a “partner” in space station development, we have gone too far. The U.S. has been subsidizing the Russian government for decades, whether it was arms during World War II, or wheat, or money to bail them out of the post-communism transition. Wouldn’t it be more prudent to spend the money in our own aerospace industry to benefit our economy?
The fact that Russia shakes our hand to be “Partners for Peace” and on the other hand sells missiles to Iran (Feb. 12) doesn’t make someone feel comfortable in any mutual project. Maybe when Daniel Goldin retires from NASA he can save the Russian space industry. Until then, let the country that is the real leader in space exploration continue its job.
