Whale Sail--The yearly whale-watching trip around Santa Catalina Island, offered by the Orange County chapter of the American Cetacean Society, will be March 2 on the Catalina Flyer. Departure will be at 8:30 a.m. from the Catalina Passenger Service, 400 Main St., Newport Beach. A brief stop to see the island is also scheduled. Cost is $40 for adults; $25 for juniors. Flight School--The Discovery Museum of Orange County is offering a workshop Saturday to teach children about migratory birds. Students will learn bird calls and construct bird feeders. The workshop is for two age groups: 4 to 6 years old and 7 to 12. Hours are 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the museum, 3101 W. Harvard St., Santa Ana. Cost is $5 for museum members and $7 for nonmembers. Artistic Nature--Bring watercolors or other paints for an “Art in the Outdoors” workshop March 2 at the Rancho Mission Viejo Land Conservancy. Artist Marilyn Zapp will lead the workshop from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $25. For reservations, directions and other information, call Laura Cohen at (714) 489-9778. The conservancy is a 1,200-acre wilderness reserve located in the coastal foothills five miles east of San Juan Capistrano.

Party Animals--The Santa Ana Zoo is celebrating its 45th birthday Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include face painting, children’s crafts, a scavenger hunt and live music. Special recognition will be given to some of the animals born at the zoo. Before the festivities begin and the zoo opens, you can “Breakfast With the Beasts” from 8:30 to 10 a.m. The event begins with a light breakfast, followed by a guided tour and talk with the staff. Then it’s off to the Children’s Zoo to help feed the animals. Cost is $15 for an adult and child over 3 years old; $7.50 for each additional person. Reservations are required.
