Bicycling Through Civil War History
There are no forced marches or C-rations, but bicyclists can get a rigorous workout nonetheless on “Lee’s Retreat,” a tour that marks the 10th anniversary of Bike Virginia, sponsored by the nonprofit Bicycling Education Assn.
About half of the 2,000 slots are still open for the June 20-25 tour, which starts in Petersburg and follows the path of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s retreat and final surrender in Appomattox in 1865. Riders must bring their own bicycles and be in good shape; the trip averages 60 miles per day.
Along the way, participants can tour the Petersburg National Battlefield and other historic sites, learn about the Civil War, and join in such recreational activities as canoeing and swimming. Registration, due by May 31, is $180 for ages 13 and up, $50 for children under 13 and $450 for families. To register, contact the Bicycling Education Assn., P.O.
