A 26-year-old woman was discovered Sunday morning apparently strangled to death in her bed, and investigators were trying to determine whether her second-floor apartment had been broken into, police said.

The body of Sunny Adrianne Sudweeks, identified by neighbors as a photographer, was found about 5 a.m. by her live-in boyfriend and another roommate, both of whom were returning home from work, according to Costa Mesa Police Lt. Ron Smith.

Late Sunday afternoon, police forensics investigators were still combing the upstairs unit for clues and trace evidence as neighbors milled about behind the police tape posted at the apartment building on the 1000 block of Mission Drive.

Two neighbors said a man had been taken away from the scene in handcuffs earlier in the day, but police said Sunday evening there had been no arrests in the case. The owner of an adjacent four-unit apartment building said the neighborhood rarely has crime and the victim and her roommates usually keep to themselves and work long hours.

The names of the boyfriend and third roommate were not released. Investigators said no motive was immediately known and it was unclear if the victim had been sexually assaulted.
