Council Will Vote on Fiber-Optic Contract

Share

In a move to provide a high-speed, high-quality fiber-optic cable network citywide, the City Council today will vote on a contract with SpectraNet International of San Diego to design and build the system to serve businesses, residents and government offices.

Mayor Tom Daly said the public-private venture would mean “state-of-the-art access to information from around the globe. It will be especially helpful to Anaheim businesses, which rely on the frequent use of electronic data.”

The system will be built in phases through 2002, with commercial and industrial areas targeted first.

Construction on the first phase, projected to cost $80 million, would start in March, with completion by December 1998.

The second phase, projected to cost $175 million and to begin in September 1998, would extend the network to the rest of the city, including residential areas.

The city-owned Public Utilities Department already has installed 96 strands of fiber-optic cable in a 50-mile loop within Anaheim to link electric and water facilities.

Today’s session is at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. A 3 p.m. workshop will precede it.
