THOUSAND OAKS
Hoping to put Thousand Oaks’ horse manure and green waste to productive use, Councilwoman Linda Parks is proposing a city composting program that would capitalize on the efforts of volunteers.
Parks will ask the City Council today to hold a meeting of organizations that may be interested in joining a joint composting program involving the city and community groups.
She would also like city officials to come up with a plan for a model composting program.
Parks wrote in a report to the council that in addition to enriching the Conejo Valley’s soil, composting would help Thousand Oaks divert manure and green waste from the area’s overburdened landfills.
She also believes that Thousand Oaks has an opportunity to educate the public about the benefits of composting by leading through example.
Parks would like to hold a meeting to draw local agencies and organizations into the effort, including the Conejo Recreation and Park District, the Organic Garden and Herb Society, the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden, and the Two Winds Ranch.
