Share

Performances by choirs from across Ventura County, an exhibit of African American inventions and screenings for sickle cell anemia will be among the activities at the third annual Afro-Centric Marketplace on Saturday in Simi Valley.

The marketplace, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mountaingate Plaza, 1197 E. Los Angeles Ave., is sponsored by the Afro-Centric Committee of Ventura County and comes on the heels of African American History Month.

“Technically, [African American History Month] is over on the last day of February,” said committee member Claretta Kerns. However, many groups, such as the Black Inventors Museum of Los Angeles, are booked solid through March, she said.

Kerns said the Black Inventors Museum will bring its traveling exhibit to the free event. In addition, the NAACP of Ventura County will provide information about its Saturday school program for first through 12th grades, which includes Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) preparation for high school students.

African-inspired crafts, jewelry and clothing, educational materials and other items will also be available.
