The NHL will notify the Ducks today whether defenseman J.J. Daigneault will be able to play tonight against Edmonton in the wake of an incident in which referee Don Koharski thought Daigneault had swung his stick at him Sunday during a game against Vancouver.

Daigneault says he thought Koharski was a Canuck trying to pick him. Team officials said video was inconclusive about whether Daigneault’s stick hit Koharski.

Daigneault, acquired from Pittsburgh for Garry Valk on Friday, was given a game-misconduct penalty and a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Defenseman Dave Karpa was disappointed Tuesday after hitting pucks for the first time since breaking a bone in his right hand Feb. 4.

“It’s still sore,” he said. “I’m going to see the doctor for another X-ray [today].”

Karpa had hoped to return to the lineup this weekend but may need another week or more.

The Ducks didn’t pursue Doug Gilmour before he was traded to New Jersey, General Manager Jack Ferreira said, but he was less willing to say he hasn’t talked to Boston about center Adam Oates.

“I talk to a lot of teams,” he said. “I’m not going to say which ones.” said Ferreira. w
