Future of Big Tujunga Wash

Must the beauty of Big Tujunga Wash be destroyed by a golf course? Is there so much nature around us that we can afford to bulldoze for fun? Why can’t we leave some land undeveloped? I’ll tell you why. Greed.
“Wasted land” is what Kathleen Anthony, Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce president, called it. What I’m sure she meant was land that does not turn a profit. Heaven help us if she or her kind travel much in our state. Think of all the waste going on in Anza-Borrego, Catalina Island and Joshua Tree.
A golf course covered with thirsty sod is a luxury for the affluent in an ecosystem suited to chaparral. Anthony and her associates would quickly trade our less spectacular native vegetation for Bermuda grass and palm trees. What then of the spine flower and the natural flow of the water in Big Tujunga Wash? Perhaps they’ll hang a quaint picture of how the area used to look in the pro shop.
The L.A. City Council should heed some of nature’s best advice when deciding this issue. Do not quickly give up what no amount of money can ever buy back. Some of us live to golf, but all of us depend upon a healthy environment to live.
