A 23-year-old skateboarder was killed Sunday when he was struck by a freight train, police said.

The San Fernando man, whose identity was not released pending notification of next of kin, was either skateboarding across the tracks or retrieving his skateboard from the tracks when he was hit by the Southern Pacific train just after 1:30 p.m., said Sgt. David Clinton of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

The accident occurred in the 10800 block of San Fernando Road at Van Nuys Boulevard, a controlled intersection with crossing gates.

Clinton had no information on whether the gates were down at the time the man was struck.

Police were told by a third party that a witness saw the man with a skateboard on the tracks even though a train was approaching.

The investigation is continuing, Clinton said.
