Share

Southwest Valley residents will have a chance to participate in Neighborhood Watch meetings with Police Department and local school representatives, attend parenting classes or meet 3rd District Councilwoman Laura Chick at a number of upcoming events.

Mothers and fathers are invited to parenting classes, sponsored by Chick’s office, the Hope in Youth organization and Lanark Park in Canoga Park.

The free meetings are held at 10 a.m. each Tuesday beginning today in the park auditorium at the corner of Lanark Street and Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

The classes are designed to teach parents to handle problems positively, improve a child’s performance in school, establish trust, respect and cooperation with children and maintain effective communication with a child.

To cultivate cooperation and communication among the community and local law enforcement and schools, Neighborhood Watch meetings will be held this week and next.

LAPD Officers Jack Erickson and Kenny Knox will join Chick and school officials at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Tarzana Elementary School Auditorium, 5726 Topeka Drive, for a community meeting.

Issues affecting the elementary school and the surrounding area, as well as how the community and the school can work together to prevent crime, will be discussed.

LAPD Officer Steve Kegley will meet with the councilwoman, school officials and residents at 7 p.m. March 12 at Woodlake Avenue School, 23231 Hatteras St., in Woodland Hills for similar discussions.

For information about the parenting classes, call (818) 609-1740. For information about the Neighborhood Watch meetings, call Erickson, Knox or Kegley at (818) 756-9891.
