Upset Man Holds Off Deputies for 5 Hours

Share

A distraught 29-year-old Camarillo man kept Ventura County sheriff’s deputies and members of the SWAT team busy for more than five hours before surrendering early Tuesday.

After an argument with his girlfriend, the man, whose name was withheld by authorities, barricaded himself inside the couple’s mobile home about 6:20 p.m. and threatened to kill himself, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

He also displayed several weapons, and the SWAT team was called out. Although the man’s girlfriend and their infant son had left the home, a deputy with the sheriff’s Hostage Negotiation Team tried to talk the man out of the home, the spokesman said.

Shortly after midnight, the man gave up. He was treated for superficial cuts to his wrists, authorities said, then taken by officials from the county’s mental health department for observation.

No criminal charges were filed against the man.
