Man Suspected of Gun Violation
Police arrested a 28-year-old man Wednesday evening after a routine traffic stop turned up a firearm and an explosive device in his truck, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. when a patrol officer saw the man drive into the parking lot of a Jack In the Box restaurant near San Fernando Boulevard and Buena Vista Street, said Sgt. Scott Wilson of the Burbank Police Department.
“It appeared he was in a hurry,” said Wilson, who did not release the man’s name.
The officer followed the early 1970s Chevrolet truck and watched the man park partly in a space for the handicapped, authorities said.
When the officer questioned the man outside the truck, the man seemed to be hiding something behind his back that turned out to be a magazine for a semiautomatic handgun, Wilson said. The officer arrested the man and called for backup.
A closer inspection of the truck turned up a loaded weapon and the explosive device, Wilson said. A bomb squad from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was called in and the device was detonated about 6:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The suspect was being held at the Burbank jail on suspicion of possessing an explosive device and a concealed weapon.
