No. 23-ranked Stanford kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive as Peter Sauer’s eight-foot jump shot from the baseline with six seconds remaining gave the Cardinal a home-court 81-80 Pacific 10 Conference victory over No. 12 Arizona on Thursday night.

Brevin Knight set up the score when he drove into the lane, drawing in Arizona’s defense before passing to the open Sauer.

Arizona’s Mike Bibby missed an off-balance three-point shot as time ran out.

Knight had 23 points and 12 assists, while Tim Young had 22 points and 17 rebounds for Stanford, 19-7 overall and 11-6 in the Pacific 10. Sauer had 10 points for Stanford, unbeaten in 11 games at Maples Pavilion this season.

A three-point shot by Kris Weems rimmed out, but Knight stole the ball from Bibby. The turnover ignited a fastbreak, with Knight passing to Young for a dunk with 56 seconds left. Miles Simon missed a shot and Young rebounded, setting the stage for Sauer.

California 84, Arizona State 66--Alfred Grigsby, a sixth-year senior whose number was retired before the game, had 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the Bears (20-8, 11-6) in their final game in 64-year-old Harmon Gym, where they won their final 18 games. Arizona State is 10-19 and 2-15.
