WEB SITE REVIEWS

Share

Name: Film Scouts

Address: https://www.filmscouts.com/index.html

What it is: Created and maintained by Webcast Multimedia Inc., Film Scouts is set up like a virtual diorama of a movie theater; the curtains even open to let you know what screening rooms to enter. Once you’re inside, the projectionist will serve up film trailers and stills, music clips, bios of the cast and crew and reviews. Offerings range from such standard movie stuff to eclectic features including a never-before-heard clip of a ballet score written for Twyla Tharp. Poke around and you’ll find an archive of past features as well as info about film festivals past and present. Don’t worry; there’s an usher to show you around.

Comments: A really interesting site with plenty of things to download. Which is, alas, its only failing. There’s not a whole lot to do while you’re waiting around except to find more stuff to download.

Name: Paramount Pictures Online

Address: https://www.paramount.com

What it is: Some great-looking graphics highlight Web pages for current and not-so-current movies (everything from “Private Parts” to “A Very Brady Sequel”). Some pages have things to do, some just have summaries, stills and credits, others have neat-looking theme pages. Also in the fold are TV show pages, pocket summaries of home videos and a place to buy Paramount gear. There are quizzes and virtual scavenger hunts. (Warning: They’ll suck you in and lead you around for hours.)

Comments: This is a fine site. And fun to look at. Oh--were you expecting more? Get in line.

Name: Lifetime Online

Address: https://www.lifetimetv.com

What it is: Recipes, craft ideas, health and fitness advice and parenting tips “for women and the people who love them.” Also the cable channel’s requisite program and movie guides, bios on Lifetime Television stars, sound and video clips of celebrity interviews and chat rooms. Holding the most possibility are the Digital Dramas, monthly interactive serials where users can help determine one of three paths the next month’s episode will take.

Comments: For women who cry at weddings, coo over recipes and just love women-in-peril-movies. Lifetime Online can sometimes get a little junky with too many graphic elements and too much peach. Very designed-for-women-and-the-people-who-love-them. As for the Digital Dramas, they are something . . . just don’t ask what.
