Residents Given Tips to Keep Coyotes Away
Secure the lids on the garbage cans, and don’t leave pet food outdoors. That’s the message from city officials to residents concerned about coyotes making unwelcome visits to their neighborhoods.
People on the eastern side of the city have been complaining about the animals more frequently since construction began in Newport Coast. Animal control teams are getting more calls about coyote sightings, officials said.
Because the animals are wild, there are limits to what the city can do, so residents must be responsible for not attracting coyotes to their yards, City Manager Kevin J. Murphy said. “You have to reduce the incentive for them to come.”
The city is also advising residents to keep pets indoors as much as possible, particularly at night, because coyotes occasionally prey on cats and small dogs.
Trying to trap coyotes usually does not work because the animals are generally too cunning to be caught, officials said.
