The Eagle Rock Community Cultural Center opened Sunday with the promise that the northeast Los Angeles neighborhood will now have a place where local artists can display their works and young people can learn about the arts.

“We are listening to the public, because this center will be whatever they want it to be,” said volunteer Kaye Beckham, who also works at the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission.

About 500 people were in attendance as the center opened in the landmark building that housed the Eagle Rock Public Library for more than 70 years.

The building, constructed in 1914 with money from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, was closed in 1988 after suffering damage from the Whittier earthquake in October 1987.

Located at 2225 Colorado Blvd., the center, which also houses the Eagle Rock Valley Historical Society, will offer offer lectures, art shows, and art and music classes.

On permanent display will be photographs from the recent Eagle Rock Snap Shot Day, which chronicled a day in the life of the community.
