Council Sets Hearing on Network Proposal

Share

A Northern California company is seeking city permission to install, operate and maintain a wireless communication network.

The City Council has agreed to set a public hearing on April 1 to consider the request by Metricom Inc., based in Los Gatos. Public Works Director Chris Becker said the city charter requires that the council first set a hearing before it reviews franchise requests.

The network would consist of radio cells about the size of a shoe box that would be installed on city-owned traffic signals, Becker said. Metricom is proposing to install about 50 radio cells.

The network, which would be available to computer users, would give them access to online systems and would allow them to send faxes and electronic messages without using a phone line.
