Coastline Community College’s Margaret M. Lovig has become the campus’ first instructor to win the California Community Colleges Foundation Hayward Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Lovig, coordinator of the Legal Assistant program at Coastline, was honored last week with $1,250 and a plaque during the foundation’s board of governors meeting in Sacramento.

“I am so honored to be selected,” Lovig said. “Since 1964, law has been the center point of my career and eventually opened the door to teaching. . . . I have experienced years of exciting and challenging work, and hundreds of wonderful students.”

Lovig was nominated for the award by Coastline’s Academic Senate for her dedication to students and to the Legal Assistant program, campus officials said. The assistance program is approved by the American Bar Assn. and prepares students for the intermediary position between legal secretary and attorney.

“The college is very fortunate to have such talent among its instructors,” said Coastline President Leslie Purdy. “It’s an honor to have Margaret’s dedication and professionalism recognized by the state.”

The Hayward Award, named for former California Community Colleges Chancellor Gerald C. Hayward, has been presented annually since 1989 to honor four community college instructors, counselors or librarians.
