5 Women to Be Honored as Business Pioneers

Five pioneering women are to be honored tonight by the Orange County chapter of the National Assn. of Women Business Owners at its inaugural awards banquet.

The honorees, said chapter President Karen Herb, are being cited for “breaking barriers and blazing trails that have allowed other women to achieve more in their businesses and communities.”

Pioneering women--Mary Sakioka, operating partner of Santa Ana-based Sakioka Farms for nearly 50 years, was recognized Thursday as a pioneering woman by the Orange County chapter of the National Assn. of Women Business Owners. Sakioka’s daughter was misidentified as the award recipient in an article published Thursday.

They are:

* Linda Dempsay. She became the first woman to head an NCAA Division 1 university sports program when she was named athletic director at UC Irvine in 1977, a post she held until leaving to help run a family business in 1984.

* Rose Hwang. A Vietnamese refugee as a teenager, she started a computer components company in Irvine with her husband in 1990. She is now president of the firm, Alpha Systems Lab.

* Marion Knott. Daughter of amusement park founders Walter and Cordelia Knott, she managed the growth of Buena Park-based Knott’s Berry Farm and was the first female director of the International Assn. of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

* Barbara London. A Women’s Air Service pilot (WASP) in World War II, she started an aircraft sales company in Long Beach with a partner after leaving the service. She is now owner and president of the business, Barney Frazier Aircraft Sales Co.

* Phyllis Sakioka. She is operating partner of Sakioka Farms, the Santa Ana-based farming company whose land holdings in Orange and Ventura counties often have become major commercial building sites.

The awards dinner will be at Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach.
