Inland County Areas Heat Up to the 90s

Balmy temperatures made for ideal beach weather Wednesday, but the unseasonably hot sun scorched Ventura County’s inland valleys.

On the Ventura coast, surfers and other beach goers enjoyed a comfortable high of 71 degrees, according to the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District. North Oxnard and El Rio reached a high of 83.

However, farther inland, the mercury climbed to 90 degrees in downtown Ojai and Thousand Oaks, 91 in Simi Valley and 92 in Moorpark.

The bucolic Santa Clara Valley was the hottest spot in the county Wednesday, reaching a high of 94 in the Fillmore-Piru area.

While soaring temperatures often make for smoggy skies in inland locales, early morning breezes blew most of the pollutants out to sea.

“We also got a sea breeze,” the air pollution district’s Kent Field said. “As the land heats up, the sea breeze counteracts that and brings in cooler air.”

Field said ocean breezes began blowing through coastal areas by midmorning, reaching farther inland by the afternoon to cool things down.
