FISH REPORT
FRESHWATER
17. CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass bite has slowed in lower lake, but remains good in upper lake. Rod Thigpin, Santa Paula, 12-4 bass, on Stocker Trout lure at 20 feet. Brian Smith, Canyon Country, 11-2 and 7-6 bass, on night crawlers from shore at lower lake. Ulises Diaz, Pacoima, 7-4 striped bass, on bloodworm from shore at west ramp.
18. LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass active in Diablo and San Felicia coves. Jeff Godfrey, Fillmore, five bass, largest 8-8. Night crawlers and plastic worms getting most. Trout action steady at north end, with Power Bait, night crawlers getting most. Trollers using Rapalas and Needlefish at dam and east end also doing well. Crappie picking up, biting mainly on mini-jigs at north end.
19. PYRAMID LAKE--Top catch, a 13-5 striped bass by Matt Douglas, Valencia, on anchovy at dam. Stripers generally slow, however, with only a few caught daily. Largemouth and smallmouth bass best bets, biting mainly on crankbaits. Some limits.
20. LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action steady for trollers using Needlefish lures between 15-25 feet at east and west ends. Several limits. Largemouth and smallmouth bass action fair in shallows, biting at eight feet or less on spinnerbaits, plastic worms and jigs. John and Ruth Stopp, Big Bear Lake, 10 bass totaling 28 pounds, on plastic worms in Cachuma Bay.
21. LAKE CASITAS--Dramatic increase in largemouth bass activity. Barry Scott, Boston, 11-4 bass, on crawdad. Mike Oltean, Santa Monica, 12-0 bass, on night crawler. Terry Baker, Ventura, 12-8, 7-8 and 6-0 bass. Charlie Weyer, West Hills, 10-8 bass, on Castaic Soft Bait. Tomas Pimienta, Baldwin Park, 13-4 bass. The list goes on.
22. CORONA LAKE--Trout fair, with big catches dropping off, but still a few lunkers caught at north end.
23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Mostly trout, with an occasional fish weighing in at 10 or 15 pounds, and an occasional sturgeon sucking up bottom baits and being hauled to the surface.
24. IRVINE LAKE--Top trout a 13-6 by Bob Long, Lake Forest, on an inflated night crawler at west shore. Lots of limits of smaller fish on lots of different baits and lures. Crappie picking up, biting in shallows on mini-jigs. Largemouth bass bite steady in shallows as well.
25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Nothing has come close to the lake-record, 13-pound 8-ounce bass caught nearly two weeks ago on an AC Plug, but catches of largemouth in the 2- to 6-pound range remain common. Night crawlers and dark-colored plastics getting most. Trout bite remains steady as well, with limits the rule, according to lake officials. Average size, 1-3 pounds.
26. LAKE SKINNER--Crappie action steady at Crappie Rock. Trout fair at Ramps 1 and 2. Largemouth bass biting sporadically in shallows. Occasional striped bass caught on surface plug or chicken liver at Ramp 2. Largest striper, a 14-12 by Dave Lester, Temecula, on an AC Plug at Ramp 2.
27. LAKE PERRIS--Bass bite remains excellent. Fred Wong, Los Angeles, 15-0 bass, on water dog at Rock Climbers’ Cove. Vang Chia, Moreno Valley, 13-0 bass, on crawdad at east end. Douglas Denman, Colton, 12-0 bass, on crawdad at east end. John Bell, Riverside, caught and released about 60 bass in two days, on Reaper lures at 40 feet. Trout fair for trollers using Needlefish and Roostertails off dam and around island.
28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--El Capitan, Hodges and San Vicente good bets for bass fishermen. All produced a fish or two in the 10-pound range, topped by a 13-9 caught on a crawdad at Hodges. Crappie bite good at El Capitan and Hodges. Trout action steady at Miramar and slow to fair at Murray.
29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Stringers remain fairly easy to fill with pan-sized rainbow trout, which are biting on almost every bait and lure, with small spinners and floating Rapalas perhaps doing best.

1. MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--31 anglers (3 boats): 2 red snapper, 16 red rock cod, 128 rock cod, 11 salmon. (Bob’s Sportfishing)--16 anglers (2 boats): 50 red rock cod, 180 assorted rockfish.
2. AVILA BAY (Avila Beach)--12 anglers (2 boats): 69 rock cod, 3 salmon, 3 ling cod, 51 red snapper.
3. SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--28 anglers (2 boats): 6 salmon, 30 barracuda. (Hornet’s Landing)--2 anglers (1 boat): 2 salmon
4. VENTURA--50 anglers (2 boats): 1 sand bass, 3 barracuda, 1 white sea bass, 14 salmon. (Harbor Village)--57 anglers (3 boats): 22 king salmon, 36 barracuda, 2 sand bass.
5. OXNARD (Cisco’s)--92 anglers (5 boats): 15 salmon, 1 white sea bass, 27 barracuda, 8 cow cod, 3 ling cod, 65 red snapper, 112 rock cod, 180 rockfish, 5 sculpin, 1 sole.
6. PORT HUENEME--40 anglers (3 boats): 54 barracuda, 1 sand bass, 13 king salmon.
7. MARINA DEL REY--22 anglers (3 boats): 13 halibut, 14 sand bass, 7 sculpin, 1 sole, 1 thresher shark. (In-Seine Sportfishing)--34 anglers (2 boats): 4 halibut, 6 sand bass, 2 sculpin, 1 black sea bass (released).
8. REDONDO BEACH--89 anglers (3 boats): 23 sand bass, 21 halibut, 13 sculpin, 3 sole, 125 mackerel.
9. SAN PEDRO (22nd St. Landing)--43 anglers (2 boats): 7 white sea bass, 8 halibut, 37 sand bass, 50 sculpin, 27 whitefish, 29 sheephead, 12 blue perch, 47 rockfish, 4 opaleye, 19 sargo, 1 black sea bass (released).
10. LONG BEACH--60 anglers (4 boats): 2 calico bass, 18 white sea bass, 48 whitefish, 31 sheephead, 271 perch, 14 sculpin, 96 rock cod, 107 rockfish, 1 cow cod, 1 ling cod.
11. SEAL BEACH--27 anglers (1 boat): 1 sand bass, 5 halibut, 28 sculpin.
12. NEWPORT BEACH (Newport Landing)--20 anglers (1 boat): 2 rockfish, 9 sculpin, 3 perch, 2 sole. (Davey’s Locker)--54 anglers (3 boats): 22 calico bass, 16 sand bass, 16 sculpin, 25 sheephead, 2 halibut, 3 sole, 21 sargo, 14 whitefish.
