Queen for a Day With Discounts

Travelers 55 and older can get discounts on the Queen Mary, a landmark attraction and hotel that is observing the 30th anniversary of its arrival in Long Beach, Calif.

But you may not have much time to use the discounts. The Long Beach City Council will decide in mid-April whether to allow the operator, Joseph F. Prevratil, to tow it to Japan to raise money for repairs and restoration. The ship may be gone for three to five years.

In the meantime, senior room rates on weekdays will be $67.50 (usually $72 to $153) and $72 to $153 for weekends (usually $80 to $160).

Admission for seniors to the Shipwalk Tour is also discounted: $9 (regular price $11). A combination ticket that offers the self-guided Shipwalk Tour and a guided tour to areas not open to the public is $13 (regular price $15).

Luncheons are served in the Promenade Cafe on Tuesdays with a choice of three prix fixe meals at $7 or $9 with dessert (usually $12). Dancing to big band music is in the Queen’s Salon.

The Royal Wedding Chapel on the Queen Mary is celebrating its 25th anniversary. On June 1, the ship is inviting former brides and grooms to participate in a mass renewal of vows. The cost will be $25 per couple, which includes the ceremony and a champagne and cake reception.

The Queen Mary has three restaurants. The Promenade Cafe is open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sir Winston’s, the dinner room serving California and continental cuisine, is open from 5:30 to 10 p.m.; and the Chelsea, which features seafood specialties and views of the harbor. Lunch is served weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
