Mexican Exports

“The Export Elite Rises in Mexico” (March 13) was both informative and alarming. Presumably, The Times will do follow-up stories with respect to the effect this NAFTA scenario has on the American worker. The implications seem to be that the “Dollar Mexicans” will continue to provide American consumers with goods produced by cheap labor, and in turn, the dwindling American manufacturing work force will continue to produce higher-priced goods that the “Peso Mexicans” can never afford.

The most distressing point revealed is that Mexico must create a million jobs a year to accommodate the baby boom, and failing that, “hundreds of thousands will probably continue to emigrate to the United States.” One would think that the loss of more than 50% of the manufacturing jobs in our major cities would be of concern to Washington.
