Bloomberg News

Motorola Inc. was awarded a contract that analysts value at $1.5 billion or more to supply cellular phone equipment to two companies that are building wireless networks in Japan. DDI Corp., Japan’s second-largest phone company, and Nippon Idou Tsushin, a Toyota Motor Corp. affiliate, said they will combine their networks to form a nationwide cellular system early next year. Japan is the world’s second-largest and fastest-growing cellular market and will give a big boost to the code-division multiple-access technology that Motorola will use. San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., which developed CDMA, is expected to receive royalty fees from Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola. Motorola shares climbed $2.1875 to close at $60.5625; Qualcomm shares rose $2.25 to close at $61.75. Both trade on the New York Stock Exchange.
