Air Bags

It seems to me that the recommendation given in The Times’ March 19 editorial regarding air bag changes does not go far enough. The real question is how many deaths of drivers and passengers of all sizes wearing seat belts are prevented by air bags. There is no question that auto makers must provide appropriate seat belts to protect people traveling in high-speed automobiles. However, to expect the air bag design to protect people unwilling to use these safety devices is unreasonably burdening society to protect people who do not assume responsibility for their own actions.

I believe the proper approach is to educate people on the use of seat belts, which would include having unbelted drivers share in the legal responsibility for their injuries or death.
