Linn Cantata to Highlight Baroque Fest
A new work by composer Robert Linn will highlight the 17th annual Baroque Music Festival of Corona del Mar, to be held June 8-15 at two locations--St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church and the Sherman Library and Gardens.
The work, commissioned by the festival, will be a cantata for four vocalists and orchestra set to excerpts from Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” The premiere will take place June 11 at the Sherman Library. It is the second work the festival has commissioned from Linn. His Concerto for Oboe, Harpsichord and Orchestra premiered in 1993.
The new piece was commissioned in memory of Robert Sangster--baroque festival board member, music critic for the Daily Pilot and senior deputy city attorney for Huntington Beach--who died in 1995.
The rest of the June 11 program will consist of other works set to Shakespearean texts.
The festival will open June 8 at 4 p.m. at St. Michael with festival director Burton Karson conducting works by Bach, Vivaldi and Handel. An organ recital by Carey Robertson will take place there June 11 at 8 p.m. The program will include music by Bach, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms.
A chamber music program to be announced will take place June 13 at 8 p.m. at the Sherman Library.
The festival will conclude June 15 at 4 p.m. at the church with Karson leading choral works by Mendelssohn and Brahms.
