GALAXY TONIGHT

Share

Opponent--Washington D.C. United.

Site--Rose Bowl.

Time--7:30.

Radio--KTNQ (1020).

Records (1996)--Galaxy 19-13, D.C. United 16-16.

Record vs D.C. United (1996)--2-1.

Galaxy update--Matching last season’s opening crowd of 69,255 and the 12-0 start will be a tall order, especially with starting goalkeeper Jorge Campos not due back from Mexico until May. David Kramer will be in the nets in his place. Tonight’s game marks the debut of forward Welton of Brazil, midfielder Martin Machon of Guatemala and defensive midfielder Danny Pena of Culver City. Last season’s leading scorer, Eduardo “El Tanque” Hurtado, is questionable because he has a World Cup ’98 qualifying game for Ecuador against Peru in Lima on Wednesday.

D.C. United update--Washington beat the Galaxy in Major League Soccer’s inaugural championship game in October but has made few moves to strengthen its team. The exception was the acquisition of Honduran national team defender Arnold Cruz. Forward Jaime Moreno of Bolivia will not play, having rejoined his national team for Wednesday’s World Cup ’98 qualifier against Argentina in La Paz. Washington got off to a 0-4 start last year, but its late-season strength earned it the MLS title.
