A motorcyclist died Sunday following an afternoon collision with a car on a two-lane highway east of here, authorities reported.

The 1:25 p.m. accident occurred on California 138 near 228th Street East, said Officer Garry Goldenberg of the California Highway Patrol.

The adult male motorcyclist, whose identity was not released pending notification of family, died at the scene, Goldenberg said.

The motorcyclist, believed to be from Arizona, was traveling westbound on the highway when he moved into the eastbound lane to pass slower traffic, Goldenberg said. He accelerated to about 70 mph and was struck head-on by a car traveling east at about 55 mph.

“The motorcyclist was the one in violation,” Goldenberg said.

There were no other injuries reported, and the driver of the car was not cited, he said.
