SOS Founder Honored for Work With Needy
Jean Forbath, founder of Share Our Selves, which provides an array of services to the poor, sick and hungry, has won an award from a service organization that honors volunteers.
The Orange Empire Sertoma Club will bestow its Service to Mankind Award on Forbath for her work at Share Our Selves, which she founded in 1970.
Forbath has never accepted a salary at Share Our Selves, better known by its acronym SOS, even though the nonprofit organization is now one of the largest providers of social services in Orange County.
Located on Superior Avenue, SOS’s 500 volunteers provide food, clothing and medical services to nearly 32,000 people a month.
Forbath resigned as director of SOS four years ago, but still holds a seat on the Board of Directors, publishes a newsletter and is in charge of Christmas programs.
“It keeps me out of the pool halls,” she quipped.
The Sertoma Club, founded in 1912 in Missouri to assist persons with speech and hearing impairments, will present its annual awards at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park.
