Negotiations between the city and its police officers have ceased, and members of the police union have asked the Chamber of Commerce to support their bid for a better contract.
In a recent letter to chamber members, the Newport Beach Police Employees Assn. asked that they contact the City Council and support the officers’ requests.
In the letter, the union said it rejected the city’s latest contract offer because officials have not delivered on promises made in 1993 to set salaries at a level that would put the city’s police officers among the top five departments in the county.
City Manager Kevin J. Murphy responded with a letter to chamber members stating that the latest offer from the city would have made Newport Beach police officers No. 2 in the county in terms of pay.
