U.S.-Netherlands Pairings Are Set

Share

Today’s Davis Cup quarterfinal at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach pits two teams operating at less than full strength. The United States is accustomed to its top players passing--as No. 1 Pete Sampras and No. 3 Michael Chang have. The Netherlands is without the services of No. 6 Richard Krajicek, the Wimbledon champion who chose not to play.

The U.S. team will put forward two Davis Cup veterans, No. 17 Jim Courier and No. 29 Andre Agassi, in hopes that the hard-court surface will maximize their strong baseline games.

Agassi will play No. 68 Sjeng Schalken, then Courier will play No. 22 Jan Siemerink. The singles will be reversed Sunday.

Saturday’s doubles will be a showdown between one of the world’s most experienced teams--Paul Haarhuis and Jacco Eltingh for the Dutch--against a young and successful pair of Americans, Jonathan Stark and Rick Leach.
